Kennedy’s Fish Restaurant, London
Fish and chips is the quintessential English fast food which has stood the test of time and rightly so since it gives so much comfort. As a child growing up on traditional Mauritian food, fish and chips seemed exotic and the rare occasions when we were treated to it, brought so much pleasure. A bit like dunking custard creams in tea.
Kennedy’s has been serving up fish and chips for decades and has a tried and tested formula that keeps bringing in the crowds both here and in Streatham. Having walked past the Goswell Road one so many times without having gone in I decided to give it a try. I usually prefer to make my own fish and chips since I can make the batter gluten-free but I can never match the unique taste that takeaway fish and chips have.
The restaurant is divided with a takeaway area and a sit down area. Both have a traditional English feel and are prepared with the prerequisites for fish and chips – salt, vinegar and ketchup.
The lunch menu is very good value and pies, burgers and grilled and poached fish are on offer together with a kids menu. Since this was our first visit we decided to go for the standard fish and chips and mushy peas (£6.50).
The portions are huge! Next time we will share one since perhaps our tummies are not as big as some.
The chips were big and chunky and not oily which is a real plus. They tasted like the real thing without the grease.
The fish was clearly fresh as it was soft and not chewy. The batter was tasty although we could not eat all due to the gluten.
The peas were very tasty as it kept things simple relying on the natural beauty of the pea.
We left Kennedy’s feeling very full and happy to have tried good old-fashioned fish and chips and now understanding why it is always full at lunchtimes.
So, do you know any other good fish and chip restaurants?
