Some restaurants are inspired by the personalities that run them. Coco des Iles is one such establishment. This restaurant offers food from Seychelles in a quiet neighbourhood in Roches-Brunes. What marks it out as a place to go to is the good food and personality of the owner Daniel Delord, who hails from Mauritius but spent alot of time in the Seychelles as a singer and entertainer.

This artistic influence is seen in the decor with one wall lined with homages to musical greats. The entertainment provided also show’s Daniel’s strong affinity to the Seychelles with videos played showcasing the beauty of the islands as well as surprising you with the local ‘sega’ played in the Seychelles which includes songs performed by Daniel himself. If you are lucky he may sing live for you!

Daniel greets you as if you are guests in his home and he is happy to share his enthusiasm for his restaurant and background with you.

This even extends to the proud display of the coco de mer which are unique to two islands in the Seychelles. The long one is the male and the round one is the female. They naturally come together!

The menu is simple and offers traditional dishes from Seychelles. We went for the fish grilled with bilimbi (250 Mauritian rupees) – a fruit with white flesh which tastes juicy and tangy. The fish was covered in a very nice mild marinade and topped with the bilimbi. We were also served lentils and other vegetable curries and chutneys which went very well with the fish. The fish is the star of the show and Mrs Delord makes it very well.

The restaurant can be very quiet but this is a consequence of its location in a quiet neighbourhood. It is worth a visit though for the taste of Seychelles both through its food and its colourful culture embodied in Daniel.

So, have you ever seen a coco de mer before?
